Since this Spring we’ve been plugging away at Coffeeguru. Direct trade roasters were contacted, hours of fact checking, and many design and layout meetings held. After fits and starts (XCode is driving us crazy!) programming is coming along at a nice pace. Now that design elements are in place I’d like to show you how Coffeeguru works.
Nearby- Initially, Coffeeguru has over 2,500 independent coffeehouses and coffeebars across the United States. Unlike other apps, Coffeeguru does not merely grab pubically available information from sources such as Google and present it within the app. Using a propriatary system, we not only found current independent coffeehouses, we also spent three months contacting all of them to determine if the information we had was correct. When choosing “Nearby”, you’re taken to a pin map showing any that are close to your location. In “Settings”, you can filter by distance and instruct Coffeeguru to show you only Direct Trade houses/bars, or Direct Trade, Fair Trade and/or In-House Roasting. Direct Trade is the default and cannot be filtered out from your search….Coffeeguru wants to find the best places for a cup of coffee. You can also choose the distance you’d like to search. Within the “Nearby” screen you can also filter by individual Direct Trade roasters. There is also a list view option.
List view shows you the name, and distance from you as well as icons indicating if it’s a coffeehouse or coffeebar, Direct Trade, Fair Trade, or in-house roaster, and if it’s a favorite, the number of stars you’ve chosen.
Choosing a specific coffeehouse gives you a lot of information. Of course you’ll see the name, address, phone number and, if it grinds Direct Trade beans, the name of the roaster it uses. In addition, you can add a photo, Tweet or Facebook, see any reviews posted by Coffeeguru users, and write your own review. You can even let us know if it’s no longer in business. We will update our database as soon as we receive new information. What’s great about Coffeeguru is that any new information will be “pushed” to all users of the app whenever they open it!
Suggestions- Is your favorite coffeehouse missing from Coffeeguru? Choose this option. There are approximately 10,000 independent coffeehouses/bars in the US. Tell us what kind of place it is, some of the basic details and if it engages in Direct, Fair, or In-House. We will add it to the database.
Events-Some Direct Trade roasters will be suppling Coffeeguru upcoming events. If there’s anything going on around you, choosing this option will let you know. It might be a festival, pop-up coffeehouse, or anything else that the roaster would like to inform the public.
Direct Trade-Do you have a favorite Direct Trade roaster? Choose this option and you can search for a nearby coffeehouse/bar that grinds specific Direct Trade beans. Twenty five roasters are featured in Coffeeguru and using this option will help you find an individual roaster.
Favorites-This is a great section for coffee lovers. If you choose a coffeehouse/bar as one of your favorites, you can rate it from 1-5 stars, enter the name of the roaster and specific coffee tasted, take tasting notes including choosing from a master list of over 80 coffee flavors (such as smokey, earthy, floral, lemon, brown sugar, etc.). They will be saved in this section.
Info-Another great resource! In this section you’ll find a coffee flavor wheel, Direct Trade roaster information, definitions, and instructions on different brew methods such as Pour-Over, French-Press, Chemex, and Siphon.
